This assignment is designed to give you the chance to practice your skills in oral documentation of sources before you have to use the skills in a major speech.
For this assignment, you will need to read two short articles in a magazine or newspaper (The articles may be related to your upcoming speech topic, or they may be completely unrelated.). You will be asked to give a 2-3 minute summary of the most important ideas from the articles, giving the source of the information and using proper documentation format. (You will need to bring a photocopy of the articles to turn in.) You may also give your opinion on the subject.
q Try to have a more creative introduction than “My articles were. . . ,” but be careful that the introduction doesn’t eat up too much of your time.
q You must give the full documentation (author, title, magazine, date) for each article. Preferably, this will be done early in the speech.
q The speech should clearly include one direct quotation from one article. The speech should also document all information and ideas that come directly from the articles.
q Try to use variety in documenting the information. Don’t fall into the pattern of saying, “The article said . . .” or “According to the article. . .” over and over.
Emphasis for this exercise will be on documentation skills, not organization or delivery. This exercise is worth 25 points and will be given on Monday, February 17 and Wednesday, February 19.
