Assignment Sheet – Informative Speech #1
For this assignment, you will prepare and deliver a speech using an appropriate visual aid.
The speech should be on an informative topic. It should contain 2-4 main points and should be based on a typed outline (with a bibliography) which follows the required format. The outline for this speech is due on Monday, February 24.
The speech should be between 4-6 minutes long. Practice speeches will be February 26 or 28 (depending on your group assignment), with final speeches given on March 3-10.
This speech is worth 100 points. Grading for the speech will be as follows:
Follow these guidelines as you prepare your speech:
1. Choose something you are familiar with so you will have enough time to organize and prepare for the speech. Try to choose an original topic or take a creative approach to the topic.
2. Choose a topic which will allow you to use visual or audio aids of some kind. Be sure the aid will add to, rather than detract from, your speech. If you need help in finding audiovisual equipment, I will be happy to arrange for the equipment IF I am given adequate notice (I consider one week adequate notice).
3. You are expected to use sources other than your personal experience to provide support materials for the speech. You may use newspaper, magazine, or journal articles; books; personal interviews; Internet articles; or other types of sources. You will need to use at least three sources. BE SURE TO PROPERLY DOCUMENT ALL SOURCES BOTH ON YOUR OUTLINE AND IN YOUR SPEECH.
4. The speech should be delivered in the extemporaneous style. You may use note cards, but please limit yourself to five cards or a single sheet of paper.
5. Take advantage of the opportunity to practice your speech and get constructive feedback from the other members of your group.
