Speech #3 - Persuasive speech
For this assignment, you will be asked to prepare and deliver a final speech using an appropriate visual aid.
The speech must be on a topic that is clearly persuasive, an attempt to change the beliefs, attitudes, or behavior of your classmates. The speech should contain 2-4 main points and should be based on a typed outline (with a bibliography) that follows the required format. The outline for this speech is due on Wednesday, April 23, the date you give your practice speech.
The speech should be between 6-9 minutes long. Practice speeches will be given on Wednesday, April 23, and final speeches will be given on April 25-May 2.
Follow these guidelines as you prepare for your speech:
1. Choose something you are familiar with so you will have enough time to organize and prepare for the speech. Try to choose an original topic or take a creative approach to the topic.
2. Choose a topic that will allow you to use visual or audio aids of some kind. Be sure the visual aid will add to, rather than detract from, your speech. If you need help in finding audiovisual equipment, I will be happy to arrange for the equipment IF I am given adequate notice (I consider one week adequate notice).
3. Be sure your topic is clearly persuasive. Also be sure to include a clear statement of your persuasive goal early in the speech.
4. You are expected to use sources other than your personal experience to provide support materials for the speech. You may use newspaper, magazine, or journal articles; books; personal interviews; Internet articles, or other types of sources. You will need to use at least three sources, including at least one written source (other than an Internet source). BE SURE TO PROPERLY DOCUMENT ALL SOURCES BOTH ON YOUR OUTLINE AND IN YOUR SPEECH.
5. You may use no more than 5 note cards or a single sheet of paper with information on one side for the speech. You will need to turn in your speaking outline when you finish your speech.
6. The persuasive speech is the most difficult speaking assignment for this class, so feedback from your classmates may be valuable in helping you do well.
This speech is worth 100 points. Grading for the speech will be as follows:
Appropriateness/originality of topic - 5 pts. Introduction - 15 pts.
Body - 30 pts. Argument – 15 pts.
Conclusion - 10 pts. Delivery - 20 pts.
Overall effect - 5 pts.
