What is a computer update or "patch?"

When someone discovers a security vulnerability in a program or operating system, they typically report the problem to the company that wrote the code in question. The company will often correct the problem by making changes to the original code or writing additional code, then making the updated code available to users. This updated code is often referred to as a "patch" because it patches the security hole in the program or operating system.

Checking for Windows Updates

(Microsoft Windows operating systems and applications):

A number of security vulnerabilities have been identified for the Microsoft Windows™ operating systems and other Microsoft products. Microsoft periodically issues updates for vulnerabilities -- these are available through Windows Update. Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you to keep your computer up-to-date. Use Windows Update to download and install updates for your computer’s operating system, software, and hardware (you must be connected to the internet to use the update program).

1. Click "Start," "All Programs" then select the "Windows Update" icon.

If you have trouble finding the Windows Update icon, or trouble opening the windows update site, open your browser and go to http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

2. If you've never run Windows Update, you'll get a security warning prompting you to confirm that you want to install the update program. Verify that the content is provided by Microsoft, then click "Yes" to accept the installation.

3. Once the update program is installed, you'll see a screen similar to the one shown here. Typically, you'll want to follow the recommended option, which is "Check for Express Updates."

4. The update program will check your computer to determine if any patches are needed. When the scan is completed, the list of available updates will be shown in a list similar to this:

Installing Windows Updates

If the Windows Update scan shows that your computer needs one or more critical updates and service packs, click the button labeled "Install updates."

Windows Update will download the selected patches, then install each one. You'll see a dialog box similar to the one shown here -- the status of the downloads will be shown in the top portion of the box. Allow the downloads to continue until all the patches have been downloaded.

Downloading Microsoft Windows Updates

Once the installation is completed, you'll see a summary of what was installed in your Windows Update browser window:

Some updates may require you to restart your computer. If prompted, click "Ok" to allow the update process to shutdown and restart your system. If a security patch requires a reboot, it WILL NOT be active until your system is restarted.

Some updates may have to be installed separately from other updates your computer needs. To make sure that all the critical patches have been installed, re-run Windows Update, and review and install updates until the number beside "Critical Updates and Service Packs" is 0 (zero).

You should always make every effort to keep your Windows operating system secure by applying any critical updates Microsoft publishes on the update website. Failure to do so can put your system at risk. To configure your system to check for and install the patches automatically, follow these simple steps.

Really -- what difference does it make whether I install these updates or not?

One of the biggest mistakes you, as the user or owner of a personal computer, can make is not taking the threat of viruses and worms seriously. If your computer is connected to the Internet, if you ever use floppy disks in your computer that have been used in another computer, or if your computer is on a local area network (LAN) the threat is especially great that your computer could be the target of an attack. The newest computer worms that are circulating the internet take advantage of security holes in vulnerable systems to silently infect those systems. The consequences can be as simple as inconvenience to as severe as destruction or compromise of your personal data. Don't think your computer isn't at risk!!!

As a responsible computer owner, you should:

  • Install a reputable anti-virus software program on your computer
  • Ensure your anti-virus software has the latest virus signature files
  • Ensure that your anti-virus software is configured properly and is enabled
  • Make sure you keep your operating system, browser, etc. current by applying the most recent security patches available.
  • Pay careful attention to email messages with attached files, opening only those attachments you have determined to be legitimate.
  • Take time to learn how to clean up your computer if it gets infected, and make time to clean it.

To Learn More:

Because of the way the newer worms infect computer systems, just having anti-virus software installed, current, and running isn't enough. These worms exploit vulnerabilities in the operating systems to "sneak in" through a security hole and infect the computer.
