WINDOWS UPDATES INSTALLATION FROM THE INTERNET
For XP Operating Systems:
- Click the Start button on the Windows task bar.
- Click on All Programs
- Click on the icon that says Windows Update. It’s usually pinned to the top of the "All Programs" menu.

- Once you click on Windows Update, it will automatically open up an Internet Explorer window to go to the update page. Note: You might need Internet Explorer 7.0 in order to be able to access the update page in XP.
- After you install the required software, a welcome screen will come up with a choice of either choosing Express or Custom.
- Note: If it is the first time you have run Windows Updates, you may get a window saying that you need to download certain installation files to continue. Click on the button to allow installation of the files and follow the on screen prompts.

- Click the Express button. It will automatically check for updates for you.
- Click on Review and Install Updates.
- Click on Install Updates.
- If you are prompted to restart your computer, restart it.
- Make sure that there are no other high-priority updates that needs to be installed. If not, then you are done updating your Windows operating system!
For Vista
- Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button
, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.
- In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.
- If any updates are found, click Install updates.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
- Install only the important updates. You can install the optional updates, but you might want to check with Microsoft before doing so, because some optional updates have bugs that haven’t been fixed for Vista.

- Note: Like XP, Vista also has an option to have Windows automatically install the critical or important updates for you. To set this up, go to change settings, and click the Install Updates Automatically @ ______ and set up the time that you want it to update, and then click OK.
Generally, It should ask you to restart your computer after it installs the updates… If so, Restart it.
Make sure that there are no other important/crititical updates that needs to be installed and then You are done updating your windows operating system!
ANTI-VIRUS INFORMATION
- Be sure to have a valid, up-to-date anti-virus program running on your PC.
- If your anti-virus subscription has expired, your updates will cease and you will not be protected against new virus threats. Renew your subscription as necessary.
- If you are NOT currently running an anti-virus program, Free programs are downloadable from the Internet such as AVG Free 8.0 at www.grisoft.com.
*Note - If you decide to install a new anti-virus program, you must first remove the old program through Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
- Update your virus definitions at least once per day. Most anti-virus programs can be set to automatically update their virus definitions at a given time, but you may also be able to run them manually. Consult your anti-virus program's documentation to become familiar with how to perform these operations.
- Make sure your anti-virus is scanning files automatically or is scheduled to run a scan at least on a daily basis. Please, scan your PC and clean up any malware or viruses prior to your health-check. Doing so, will help speed up the process of getting your PC connected to the campus network.
