  A lavishly-produced historical biography of the early years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Cate Blanchett plays the title role; supporting cast includes Geoffrey Rush, Joseph Fiennes, and Richard Attenborough. Awards: Golden Globe (Best Actress, Cate Blanchett).

Ridicule
(directed by Patrice Leconte, 1996)
  An idealistic young man braves the treacherous world of the French royal court, where "Louis XVI still ruled, but wit was king." Caught between the pretty and innocent Mathilde and a beautiful but corrupt Countess, our hero attempts to gain favor with the king and help his provincial town. Ridicule is a witty satire of the manners and morality – or lack thereof – of eighteenth-century France. In French with English subtitles. Awards: Academy Award nomination (Best Foreign Film); British Academy Award (Best Foreign Film); César Award, France (Best Film, Best Director, Costume Design, Production Design).

The Molly Maguires

  Sean Connery stars as the leader of the Molly Maguires, a secret society of militant coal miners battling against mine-owners for better working conditions in 19th-century Pennsylvania. Richard Harris co-stars as the undercover detective sent in by the owners to break the Molly Maguires; Samantha Eggars provides the romantic interest. Awards: Academy Award nomination (Best Art Direction/Best Set Decoration).

All Quiet on the Western Front
(directed by Lewis Milestone, 1930)

  This classic adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s World War I novel follows a group of German recruits through the war, vividly depicting the loss of patriotic idealism in the mud-filled trenches of the front. Starring Lew Ayres. Awards: Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Director); Academy Award nominations (Cinematography, Writing).

Gandhi

  An epic telling of the life and death of India’s great political and social leader Mohandas Gandhi. Ben Kingsley stars as Gandhi; the cast also includes John Gielgud, Martin Sheen, and Candice Bergen. Awards include: Academy Awards (Best Actor [Ben Kingsley], Best Director, Best Picture, Cinematography, Original Screenplay); multiple honors as Best Film of the year (including New York Film Critics Awards, Golden Globes, and British Academy Award).
