Assessment Activities for 2004-2005

1. Moral reasoning pre-test and post-test:

  • Using a hot-button issue of your choice (one that will usually prompt strong, emotional reactions), have the students write about the topic. Collect the work and save it in a safe place for later assessment.

  • Near the end of the term, assign another hot-button issue and follow the same procedure, keeping these separate from the first assignment.

  • If you want to grade this assignment as part of course work, make copies first for program assessment use.

  • At the end of the term, all the work will be collected and a statistical sampling of the essays will be evaluated by mentor volunteers to assess student progress in approaching moral issues with openness to diverse viewpoints.

  • The following wording for the assignment is suggested:

  • Write a short essay of 1-2 pages in which you reflect critically on one of the following issues:

    2. Journal entries in which students write on assigned topics about which we wish to collect information.

  • This work will be collected by the faculty mentors, who will then write up a report using the Report form provided for that month.

  • Fill in the objective portion with numbers.

  • Use the narrative/comments section to summarize and note trends

  • Provide a sampling of quotations from students' writing that illustrates these trends and make clear the student "voice."

  • The reports will then be sent to the Mentor Program Coordinator, who will publish the info. in some form (E-mail, web site or Q drive) for all mentors to review and compile all the reports into an overall program assessment report at year's end.
